I put out an open call one night in 2017 in response to the emotional turmoil I felt over Minneapolis police brutality shootings that made national headlines. It was one of those things where I didn’t know what I wanted to create, but I knew I had to do something, anything to express the anger and sadness I think we all felt. Kasey responded right away. I had never met her before, but lo and behold an hour later the rain began to pour and Kasey showed up in an empty parking lot and ready to create. It was one of those experiences shooting where I barely had to direct her, or if I did, simply wave a finger and she knew exactly what to do. It’s rare that I stumble into shoots like this where both me and the model have this intrinsic understanding and fluidity. Kasey was a joy to work with and an incredibly talented dancer and choreographer. People who have this burning need to create in the cold rain at night are my kind of people.
